College Scholar Awards

College Scholar Award 2007-2008

Eligibility: You must have a 3.5 GPA or higher and one or more of the following: 29 ACT, 1950 SAT, 680 CR, or 680 W.

Instructions:  To compete for a College Scholar Award, please respond to one of the four essay topics below.  Responses must be typed, doubled-spaced, and no more than 1,000 words.  Included on each page, in the upper right-hand corner, should be your last name and topic number. Your submission should include a cover page with your name and topic selection.  Two copies of your completed scholarship essay should be mailed to:

Essay Topics:

  1. Do children who spend large amounts of time playing active virtual sports, on systems such as the Nintendo Wii, develop a false sense of confidence in their competitive abilities?
  2. New techniques in molecular biology have made it relatively easy to genetically engineer food products for humans and other animals. Do the benefits outweigh the costs?
  3. Would you prefer to be a small fish in a big pond or a big fish in a small pond?
  4. What are the essential qualities that define a work of art? Use specific examples to illustrate your answer.

Because The College of Wooster curriculum emphasizes the importance of writing, your essay will be evaluated in terms of how well you demonstrate thoughtful arguments, intellectual imagination, audience awareness, and engaging prose, as well as clarity, concision, and accuracy of language.  Your essay will be read by members of the College faculty.

Please note that your College Scholar essay and completed application for admission must be post-marked no later than January 1, 2008.  If you enclose your essay response with your completed application for admission, please make sure that the envelope clearly indicates “College Scholar Essay Enclosed.”
