What documents are required for an application?

International FairBefore applying for admission to The College of Wooster, you must have successfully completed your secondary education or anticipate its completion in the semester preceding your entrance to the College. Only completed applications will be reviewed for admission. In addition to the requirements of the Common Application, non-U.S. applicants are required to submit the following:

  • Certified true copies of your secondary school records and certificate(s)
This means a transcript of grades earned in individual classes throughout your secondary education, typically from years 9-12 or 13. Certificates may include GCE, HSC, HKCE, Bachillerato, BECE, SSSCE, etc. Translations must be accompanied by an authorized copy of the original.
  • Official SAT I scores
The SAT I exam is a standardized college admission test administered by The College Board. It is designed to test both verbal and quantitative skills. Because it takes four to six weeks for standardized test results to reach us, we recommend taking the SAT I and TOEFL in the autumn (the October or November sittings) to ensure that we receive your scores by the February 15 deadline. Upon registering for the exam, be sure to indicate that you would like to have official results sent directly to Wooster. (The College of Wooster ETS Code is 1134.) For more information on the SAT exam, test center location, dates, and registration, visit the College Board Web site at http://www.collegeboard.com.
  • Official TOEFL / Official IELTS

English competency is required of all international students regardless of their language of instruction.  If you are a native English speaker or if you have taken AP or IB courses in English we can waive your TOEFL/IELTS requirement.  Wooster requires either a TOEFL score (paper-based) of 550, a TOEFL iBT (internet-based) of 80, or an IELTS 7 band score.  For more information on TOEFL test center locations, dates, and registration, visit TOEFL on the web at http://www.toefl.org.  For more information on IELTS, visit http://www.ielts.org. (IELTS is jointly owned by the British Council, IDP: IELTS Australia, and the University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations)

Contact Sean Menton, the Coordinator of International Recruitment to ask for a waiver of if you have other questions regarding the language exams.

  • Three letters of recommendation
One letter should come from a guidance counselor, principal or headmaster, one from a current English teacher, and one from a teacher of your choice. These letters should speak to your academic achievement and potential, leadership skills, maturity, and other individual qualities.
  • Foreign Student Financial Aid Application
Please see the Financial Aid section for more information on filling out this form. Note: You must complete the Foreign Student Financial Aid Application even if you are not applying for financial assistance. In compliance with U.S. immigration regulations, Wooster cannot issue you an I-20 form until this document is on file assuring your financial resources.

When is the application deadline?
Completed applications must be submitted to the Office of Admissions by February 15 for the term beginning in August or October 15 for the term beginning in January. Students wishing to apply after February 15 or October 15 may do so, but priority consideration for both admission and financial aid is given to those applicants who meet the stated deadline. Those applicants who miss the deadline will be considered, on a space and aid available basis.

How does Wooster review applications?
As a selective institution, Wooster looks closely at all components of the application. Academic credentials including test scores, grades, level of course work, quality of school, and teacher recommendations are extremely important indicators of success at Wooster. Because Wooster has a very active student body, we are also interested in learning about an applicant's extracurricular talents, interests, and leadership experience.

When will I be notified of the admission decision?
The Coordinator of International Admissions will review all application files as they become complete beginning on December 15. You will receive e-mail notification once your file has been read. The Coordinator then submits the application to the Admissions Committee for the final decision. It may take up to 3 weeks to produce an official admission decision. Often, the Coordinator will be able to notify students of the admissions decision via e-mail; however, a formal letter will be sent as well.

For accepted students applying for financial aid, the acceptance letter will be held and sent along with the financial aid award letter, which may take another 1-2 weeks to be produced by the Office of Financial Aid. The "acceptance packet" will be sent via DHL express courier service.

Can I be admitted for Spring semester?
The vast majority of international students apply for entry in the fall term. Applying for admission in the spring term is possible, however there are a few points to consider:

  • A comprehensive international pre-orientation is given only in the fall and not in January.
  • Several spring courses are available only after a fall prerequisite course has been taken.

Admission of Global Nomads
Wooster endorses the common term "Global Nomad" to apply to U.S. citizens living abroad and Permanent Residents. We recognize that Global Nomads possess a special wealth of knowledge and talent to share with the Wooster community. Experience overseas definitely enhances one's application for admission, so please be sure to highlight such experience in your essay or on the application form. Although you may be an American citizen, you are in many respects a "citizen of the world." At Wooster, you will find an environment that offers a diverse student body, a cultural sensitivity to your unique background, and a faculty interested in seeing that your need for cross-cultural exchange continues to be met.

Does Wooster admit international transfer students?
Yes, but it is important to understand our transfer policy. Transfer applicants to Wooster must submit everything required of first-year applicants plus a Dean's Reference form and an official copy of their college or university transcript. One of the recommendations must come from a current college professor. Wooster allows a maximum of one year's worth of transfer credit to students coming from overseas institutions. This does not mean, however, that you will be guaranteed the maximum credit. The credit that is awarded is typically given as elective credit, which can be used toward graduation requirements, but not toward credits in your major field of study. Satisfactory performance is required and transfer courses must be similar in scope and content to Wooster offerings. International students seeking to transfer from a U.S. institution may receive up to two years of transfer credit for similar coursework and a minimum comprehensive G.P.A. of 2.5 is required. A Wooster Transfer Credit Report will be sent with the acceptance packet, indicating the Registrar's determination of approved credit.
